I am a First Nations person born and raised in Northern Alberta to a large family of sixteen where I descended from a long line of medicine men. My husband and I currently reside in the province of British Columbia. It was here where, in 1999, that I renounced false doctrine, including Native Spirituality and all the effects it had in all areas of my life. Since then I have been blessed richly with the freedom that comes only from the Lord Jesus Christ. I am by no means saying that I am exempt from tests, trials, and tribulations, but rather, now that I have the help and power of the Holy Spirit, I am in a much better situation to deal with these issues as they arise. During my renunciation the Lord God instructed me to write a book about Native Spirituality, what it really is and what the Bible really says about it. Out of that session was born Muddy Waters: An Insider's View of Native Spirituality.

My concern is for the Christians out there who believe that there is nothing wrong with worshiping God in a sweat lodge or incorporating Native Spirituality into Christianity. Actually, this is called synecretism - the combining of belief systems that don't really fit - and it does not reflect God's true character. The following are God's warnings against the unholy practices found in Deuteronomy 18:10-13:

"There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11) or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12) For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD; and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. 13) thou shalt be perfect with the LORD thy God." KJV

A note in the KJV about verse 18:10 states: "Child sacrifices and occult practices were strictly forbidden by God. These practices were common among heathen religions. Israel's own neighbors actually sacrificed their children to the god Molech (Leviticus 20:2-5). Other neighboring religions used supernatural means, such as contacting the spirit world, to foretell the future and gain guidance. Because of these wicked practices, God would drive out the heathen nations (Deuteronomy 18:12) The Israelites were to replace their evil practices with the worship of the one true God."

This concern extends to unbelievers as well because I have run into many who claim that Native Spirituality is biblical. Mainly because of this reason I tested Native Spirituality against Scripture to prove or disprove whether it is biblical. I also long to appeal to First Nations people or anyone else following this path of destruction to 'come out of her' as God appeals to all in Revelation 18:4. Many New Agers have hijacked Native Spirituality not knowing what they have done. Some have become self-appointed shamans and don't realize the dangers involved with that. True shamans know exactly the forces of darkness they are dealing with, but a self-appointed neophyte would only be scratching the surface and would not understand the extent of the darkness involved.
